January’s town hall meeting set Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s African American Agenda (CM3A). CM3A has partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to improve the success rate of African American students in the lowest performing schools.

Statically, Charlotte’s lowest performing schools:

  • Score an average of 22-26% lower on the North Carolina Writing Assessment

  • Score almost 32% lower math scores at the middle school level

  • Educate larger percentages of children on free or reduced lunch (82% of Achievement Zone middle school children receive free or reduced lunch)

  • Serve minorities  (i.e., West Charlotte High is 88% African American and Bishop Spaugh is 90% African American)

Due to these statistics, Superintendent Gorman designated the following 11 schools as the Achievement Zone:

Garinger High
Waddell High
West Charlotte High
West Mecklenburg High
Midwood High (Formerly, 8th Grade Plus Program)
Martin Luther King Middle
Sedgefield Middle
Bishop Spaugh Middle
Wilson Middle
Billingsville Elementary
Shamrock Gardens Elementary

CM3A asks you to fulfill your commitment to positively impact the African American community. The Achievement Zone needs volunteers, such as yourself, to work with students. Volunteer assignments include test proctors, speakers, tutors, mentors, etc.

To register click here for the CMS website. Be sure to use CM3A as your Business/Community Group Name. Choose 3 Achievement Zone schools (see above list) as your preferred volunteer sites.

With your help and dedication, implementing the African American Agenda will create sustainable, positive change.
