African American Community Stakeholders Collaborate to Address Disparities Charlotte, NC — NC State Senator Malcolm Graham and other citizens will join on January 5 – 6, 2007 in a public town hall meeting convened to address disparities in the region’s African American community and to plan an agenda for the future. The Charlotte Mecklenburg African American Agenda (CM3A) conference, held at The Charlotte Convention Center both days, will be free and open to public. Over 500 members of the community are expected to attend. Registration is recommended. “We’ve been talking with people in the community for more than a year about this effort,” says Senator Graham. “It’s important that we take a look at the ‘man in the mirror’ and determine our community’s call for action.” Juan Williams, Fox News Sunday panelist, is confirmed to speak on Friday, January 5, 2007. In addition to his weekly television and radio appearances, Williams recently published, Enough, a book that takes aim at today’s prominent African American leaders and what Williams believes is a “culture of failure” within the black community. Mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin has been invited to close the meeting on Saturday. Mayor Franklin has successfully forged broad public-private partnerships in Atlanta and will share her strategies with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg audience. Other speakers will be confirmed. According to the United States census, African Americans lag behind the total population in everything from education to home ownership. Senator Graham is chairing the effort to insure that community members link together and collaborate to address the gaps. Many in the community are lending their support as ambassadors by endorsing collaborative leadership in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. US Congressman Mel Watt will serve as honorary chair. Participants will be able to register on-line, by fax and by telephone. ### For more information, contact Bonita Buford at 704.737.2657 or Shawn Hegele, The Lee Institute, at 704.714.4453. |
